about

Another handful of the better solo mandolin recordings I've made over the past few years. You can watch me play all these tunes, among many others, at www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsnpf5HCKhFaiDscoE93Rq8f9h-U9YPYT.

The Kesh Jig, The King of the Fairies and Out on the Ocean, a jig, hornpipe and jig respectively, are all common session tunes. The Muckin' o' Geordie's Byre is in fact a Scottish tune, and I understand Lannigan's Ball to be sung as often as it is played; both are jigs that I learned many years ago from books of fiddle music by Edward Huws Jones. After the Battle of Aughrim, a march, is usually played in A minor; here, I play it a whole step lower, allowing me to make use of the mandolin's open G and D strings.
